(1) These categorizations are, of course, the informal opinion of the website editor. For example, Mary Cassatt wrote of Cezanne as, "the first impressionist, Monsieur Cezanne -- the inventor of impressionism, as Madame D. [ed. I assume Degas] calls him..." But while Cezanne knew the impressionists and occasionally exhibited with them, both he and his art stayed pretty much apart. (Mary Cassatt quote is from a letter to Mrs. Stillman in 1894. (2) Sisley's parents were English, but he was born in Paris and painted in France.
(3) Mary Cassatt was American, but was part of the core group of Independents grouped as the "Impressionists".
(4) Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, but it seemed silly not to include him here.
